At the 2015 NIFDA conference, I had the privilege of hearing George Lutz, founder of Honor and Remember, Inc., share the mission of his organization. On December 29, 2005, George’s son was killed by a sniper’s bullet while on patrol in Iraq. During his grieving process, he spoke to many Gold Star families and discovered a common need for knowledge that their loved ones’ sacrifices were not in vain and that the nation would never forget their sacrifice. He then made it his mission to create a symbol that would be recognized as a tribute to the men and women of the US Armed Forces who died as a result of serving their country.
The Honor and Remember flag was created to recognize these heroes, and it was unveiled on Memorial Day 2008. Honor and Remember, Inc. continues to promote their mission to establish, educate, present, and comfort fallen military heroes and their families. This flag can be personalized with the name of a loved one as a tribute. Honor and Remember, Inc.’s goal is to place a personalized flag in the hands of the families of every man and women who died in military service. As George Lutz said in an interview on Veterans Day with CBS News, “We have flags for every state, we have flags for every city, every branch of the service has a flag, everybody has a flag, but the one group that enables us to fly all of those flags has no symbol, and that is why the Honor and Remember flag is so important.”
Requests by family members, ways to support Honor and Remember, Inc., and more details about the flag can be found at HonorandRemember.org.
