In today’s global economy, consumers purchase products from countries all over the world. Although it may not always influence your buying decisions, a credible “Made in America” label is crucial when purchasing a United States flag. In fact, the Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA) estimates that about 7.5 million flags that are bought each year are foreign-made.n
Why Buy American-Made U.S. Flags
- Symbolism: The American flag is an internationally recognized symbol of our country and freedom. When purchasing a U.S. flag, you are showing pride in your country, and your flag should reflect that by being made in the USA.
- Quality: American-made U.S. flags are manufactured with pride using the highest quality American-made materials to ensure durability, vibrant colors, and attention to detail.
- Support U.S. Workers: An FMAA certified flag is made from materials manufactured in the U.S. and produced by American workers in American factories. Purchasing American-made products bolsters domestic industries and businesses, leading to job creation and sustainability within our own country. This not only benefits employed individuals but also generates a positive ripple effect throughout the economy. Steady jobs and incomes allow people to spend more on goods and services, thereby stimulating economic growth.
- Strengthening the Manufacturing Sector: Supporting American-made products also enhances our nation’s manufacturing sector. A robust manufacturing base is essential for a thriving economy, as it fosters innovation and technological advancement. By investing in American manufacturing, we contribute to the future growth and competitiveness of our country.
How to Know if a Flag is Made in the USA
The simplest way to determine if a flag is made in the USA is to check the label. It should clearly state that it is made in the U.S. Additionally, look for the FMAA seal on the flag. This seal certifies that the flag is made from domestic materials and that every step of the manufacturing process occurred in U.S. facilities with U.S. labor.
Unfortunately, not all flags labeled “Made in the USA” are genuinely made in the USA. When shopping on websites selling products from various sellers, here are some tips to identify U.S. flags that may be mislabeled:
- Price: If the price is significantly lower than other “Made in the USA” offerings on the website, it is probably not made in the USA.
- Materials: U.S.-made flags are made of 200 Denier Nylon or 2-ply polyester material. Some flag manufacturers brand their fabric with names such as Endura-Nylon, Nylon I, Nyl-Glo, Perma-Nyl, Poly-Max, PolyExtra, Tough-Tex, and Koralex II.
- Construction: Authentic U.S.-made flags will have heavy-duty canvas headings with two brass grommets or a pole sleeve.
The only surefire way to ensure you are buying a U.S. flag made in America is to purchase from a certified FMAA dealer or manufacturer. You can find a full list of FMAA member companies, including A Stars & Stripes Flag Corporation, in the FMAA Directory.
Support the “Make American Flags in America Act of 2023”
If you believe, as strongly as I do, that American flags should be made in the USA, you can support the bipartisan bill presented to Congress, H.R. 4137, the Make American Flags in America Act of 2023. This bill would require all federal government agencies to purchase and fly U.S.-made American flags. In addition, it would mandate a study to review current labeling laws and how to enforce them related to American flags. You can find more information on H.R. 4317 and how to support it on the National Independent Flag Dealers website.
